4b. Pass on a turn or at a street intersection when you can inconspicuously turn your head to take a look.

Ha!! Never heard that term before (carrot) but I know the concept. Towpath Marathon, Ohio....I was focused on running my first marathon under 3 hours. There was a lovely woman in front of me for 13.1 miles (passed her at the half). I was just fixated on her behind. I finished under 3. She was the first place woman finisher. I thanked her when I saw her later. I didn't say why.

I often find that the "carrots" are much better runners than me anyway so by default are always in front of me. And there I was thinking that I was the only one who used this motivational technique. How wrong I was ....

Mile 10 of the 2007 San Jose RnR Half.

Legs long and lithe, ended in barely covered cheeks that had just the right combination of tone and bounce. A beautiful, very light brown hue that showed no tan line.

I quickly decided that I would not comment nor take a peek over my shoulder.

I only lingered at the slightly slower pace for a minute or so. The extra seconds on my PR was well worth it.
